Nahji is a smart and determined ten-year-old girl from Assam, India. Many of the girls her age pick tea on the local plantations for very low wages. Some of them marry very young or, like her sister, work cleaning people’s houses. Nahji sometimes sews beads on silken saris—Indian dresses—to make a little extra money.
But Nahji dreams of a different life, one that includes getting a good education and taking her mother out of the tea fields. And it all starts with a little duck named Mutka!
